NOVEMBER NOTES #2

As November draws to a close, students and staff are looking forward to a few days to rest, relax, and recharge.  Our virtual college visits conclude for the fall next week with visits from Penn State and St. Olaf.  There are many external opportunities to connect with colleges and universities, so we encourage students and families to explore the respective college websites for more information.  A few external opportunities of note that are coming up:

Terrific Ten College Exploration Series

Ten of the top public research universities around the country have partnered to help you and your family navigate a national college search process in a virtual world. This is an opportunity to engage with admission experts to learn how to effectively search for and compare colleges, pay for your education, and find the academic and student experience that is right for you. University College Dublin North American Info Session | Saturday, November 21, 2020 from 1pm to 2pm

Tuscarora High School will be hosting the 6th Annual Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Showcase.  This event is designed to expose our school community to the many options that are available at HBCUs.  We want to expose and educate our school communities and encourage all students, regardless of ethnicity, to include these institutions during the college selection process.  There are over 30 HBCUs committed to the 6th Annual HBCU Showcase. In addition to the HBCUs that will be in attendance, there will be a guest speaker, NCAA presentation, and community scholarships. For more information visit the .

9th and 10th Grade Info

Sophomores and Freshmen, this would be a great time to explore your and its tools. This week's Naviance tool is the Journal.  

Find it by logging into FCPS 24/7→ Naviance→About Me→My Stuff→Journal.

Write an entry in the Journal about your plan.  Think about your life goals, both personal and postsecondary (after high school).

  • What steps would you like to take to achieve these goals?  
  • Are there some different paths to consider to meet these goals?

11th Grade Info

Each summer, 80 of the world's most accomplished high school students gather at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is the first cost-free to students, summer science & engineering program to combine on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research.

The (RSI) application is opening this Sunday, November 22, 2020. Students interested in completing an application will need to complete the Transcript Request Google Form for their official transcript to be sent from the school. 12th Grade Info

The Northern Virginia Section of National Council of Negro Women, Inc. 2020-2021 Oratorical Scholarship Opportunity. 

This year’s theme is, "Atmospheric Pressure and the Social Normality of Today".  We are inviting 12th grade students of African-descent to apply for these scholarships. This is our fifth annual oratorical competition and we encourage students to apply male or female for the chance to become one of the recipients of our scholarships. We would like every student who qualifies to take advantage of this opportunity. The submission deadline is Friday, January 22, 2021. If selected contestants will be notified no later than Friday, February 5th, 2021.

Essays may be written as a poem, spoken word, rap, or speech. If selected, applicants will perform their original writing on Saturday, February 27, 2021 via Zoom. FCPS Back2Fairfax Teacher Seminar

The third annual Back2Fairfax Teacher Seminar will be held virtually on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This event will give current high school juniors, seniors, graduates, and former FCPS Teachers for Tomorrow students an opportunity to meet and hear from teachers and administrators in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Participants will attend breakout sessions that will cover a variety of topics including developing a resume, preparing for an interview, applying for a license, finding the school that is the right fit, and teacher and administrator panels.  Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit with exhibitors from Title I, Early Childhood, Pre-Teacher Employment with FCPS, Great Beginnings, Teacher Leadership, Employee Benefits, and various professional groups and organizations. This online event is free and
